Checking Your Indexed Pages
Checking your site's indexed pages can be a great way to see what percentage of your website is included in the search engine index.

Today, we are going to talk about Checking Your Site’s Indexed Pages. If you havn’t been following  read my last article covered Checking Your Website’s Rankings.

In a nutshell, before your website can achieve those #1 rankings that you’ve staked your sanity on, it HAS to be indexed in the search engines. Today, we are going to find out where you stand by answering some easy questions…

  • Is my site indexed?
  • If so, how many pages are indexed?
  • Are my top pages indexed?

Let’s Find Out

It’s actually very easy to find out if how many of your site’s pages (if any) are indexed. Follow the instructions below to find out the total number of pages indexed:

  • Starting with Google, type site:yoursite.com in the search box. Be sure to replace yoursite.com with your actual domain. Hit enter.
  • Record the number of pages returned. This represents the current number of pages indexed in Google for your domain. For example, as of today I have 117 pages indexed by Google.
  • Repeat this step in Yahoo & MSN.

Check Important Pages

In addition to checking the total number of pages indexed, you’re going to want to find out if your site’s most important landing pages have been indexed. After all, you would hate to have wasted a lot of time optimizing a page that search engines can’t even see.

Enter the full URL of the page you are looking for in Google’s search box. If you perform a search and get a listing returned for the exact URL you entered then congratulations, your page has been indexed!

If you can’t seem to find the page you are looking for, but think it is still indexed you can try searching for a string of text that may be found on the page.

To do this, highlight a unique term on the page you are looking for, then go to Google’s search box and enter it in using quotations. For example, I entered “SEO Snipers are also trained in camouflage” to try to locate my SEO Sniper page.

Extras

To get more data about your site, sign up for a Google Webmaster & Yahoo Site Explorer account. Once you verify that you’re the site owner by placing the meta verification tags, you will be privy to some high-quality data including indexed pages, site diagnostics, errors, etc.

This will enable you to monitor trends and catch potential issues as soon as they are found, and it is a huge advantage to make sure your site stays on good terms with the search engines.
