What Is SEO & Why Is SEO Useful?

Explaining SEO in Lehman's terms, as well as why it can be useful to your website.

Disclaimer: Just a word of warning to my readers. This is my very first video, and I sound like a complete and utter jackass! If you can, please try to disregard my clumsiness and pension for repeating random words.

That being said, it’s time to delve into our long and arduous SEO journey by asking a stunningly simple question.

What Is SEO?

SEO, stands for Search Engine Optimization. Ground-breaking stuff, right? By definition, SEO is the practice of trying to improve the overall volume and quality of traffic to a website via various souces, such as “organic” search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) and referring websites.

Typically, the higher your website ranks in the search engines the more traffic you will receive. This is just a generality of course, as this often depends on the keywords you’re optimizing for and the amount of search volume that keyword may (or may not) receive.

What Does SEO Involve?

Although there are too many factors to count in search engine algorithms, most SEO’s approach a Search Engine Optimization campaign the same way…by breaking it down into two basic functions.

  1. On-Site SEO
  2. Off-Site SEO

On-Site SEO refers to any work you do ON the website that may have any potential impact in your search engine rankings. This may involve such things as editing HTML, title tags, meta tags, adding hyperlinks, or placing Alt tags on your images. In the beginning of an Search Engine Optimization campaign, this is where a bulk of your time will be spent.

Off-Site SEO refers to any work you do for your Search Engine Optimization campaign that DOESN’T directly involve making changes on the website. This includes such things as link building, directory submission, local content optimization, video optimization, and even social media. While these efforts may often be overlooked, they become increasingly important over time. You can’t make major changes to your site forever, eh?

Why Is SEO Useful?

Not surprisingly, there are still many skeptics of the practice of SEO. In fact, I grow more and more assured that some people think SEO is pure witchcraft by the day. For those of you who may be considering signing on with an SEO company or starting your own campaign, here are a few useful reasons why it may be good for you.

  1. Increased Volume of Traffic
  2. Better Traffic Quality
  3. More Exposure to Subsidiary Pages
  4. More Opportunity for Leads!

This is all assuming that your SEO is solid from the get-go. However, if it’s done right you can see that investing in Search Engine Optimization is a solid long-term strategy for your business. I mean, who wouldn’t like more traffic and leads, right?

Hope this helps, and please go easy on me for the lousy acting in the video.
