You Have 5 Bullets in Your SEO Gun...

Here is a question that was posed to me recently by a client:

“If I only had five bullets in my (theoretical SEO) gun, what do I fire at with those 5 shots?”

Almost by accident, this client forced me to be tactical on the spot (while also creating illusions of old Clint Eastwood or John Wayne cowboy flicks). The client’s question got me thinking. If I had only five things that I could do for a site to enhance it’s SEO, what would I do?

I mean really – what are the top 5 core tactics (as they stand now in 2010) that are likely to drive higher traffic and rankings to your website quickly?

Luckily, I realized (and since SEO is a copycat industry as much as any other) the answers were already out there for me. SEOMoz recently did a study in which they tried to identify the Top 5 Positive/Negative Search Engine Ranking Factors as well as the current structure of most search algorithms.

Based off of their list (and using some good old-fashioned know-how), here’s what I’d do (in order):

  1. Start building links to increase your link popularity. You want to acquire inbound links from a diverse set of link sources. Remember, when building links it is not just about quantity – but quality! So while you should have a high quantity of inbound links, focus on getting them from high-quality sources – meaning other high-authority websites. Also, no link farms!!!
  2. Work to be an “authority” and create trustworthiness with your users and search engines. What does this mean? This means creating a website that is valuable to users, be link-worthy, and eliminate any on-site nonsense (black & grey-hat SEO) that may effect your site’s user experience and searchability.
  3. Edit your title tags to ensure that they’re descriptive and include target keywords. In terms of on-site optimization work, title tags are easily to thing that will have the most immediate impact (if done to SEO best practices using solid keyword research).
  4. Create a solid base of HTML content that is valuable to readers, descriptive, and using target keyword phrases. It is this content that will be the hallmark of everything you’re able to do SEO-wise (now and in the future).

All other tactics serve as support systems that serve to reinforce the content – which is why they say “Content is King”. Focus on delivering valuable content that is well thought out and descriptive, and you’ll be setting yourself up for SEO success down the road.

  5. Work on creating solid Meta Descriptions that reinforce your Titles and HTML content. Although these tags aren’t the big pieces of the puzzle that they used to be, they still often appear underneath the listings in the SERP’s – making them a prime spot to use descriptive text and to target keywords.

Again, there are many other pieces of the puzzle that will eventually go into an SEO campaign. However, when posed with the question of what I’d do if I only had 5 bullets in the gun I think this strategy would give me a fighting chance of getting out of any scrape with at least my life (and hopefully my wits too)!

Hope this helps. Happy optimizing!

    I would go with:

    1: Keywords Research
2: SEO – Page title, Meta Description, Content and yes Meta Keywords
    3: Link Building
    4: Social Media – SMO
    5: Watch SiliconCloud Webinars!

I do like the trend of making meta descriptions in call to actions!

All worthy choices, however my list was more based around action items – which would assume keyword research. Also, SMO would be something to be partially included in the link building portion – although it's still a bit of a black box in terms of SEO. Meta keywords aren't widely used as a ranking factor anymore by search engines.

        Hi there,

Sorry about that, I went with the four items that I would aim for and go with. 90% of the people agree with you on the meta keywords but I am still unconvinced not sure why but I rather play safe. Why do you view that SMO is still black box? But I like that you did not attack my webinars (sorry for that). Really interested in your views on SMO,

That's cool, and thanks for the comments Patrick. I love stirring up a little debate!

As far as Social Media Optimization goes – while I know it's super important as an SEO, I still get tons of kick-back from clients anytime I try to suggest they should utilize social media a little more. The reason I say it's a black box is that (due to the kick-back I often receive) clients generally don't seem to understand the value of utilizing social media on a large scale – even when I try to explain to them the benefits of exposure, authority, and input they'd receive from customers (not to mention backlinks).

Ah you are so right. SEO they get and understand so why is it such a big leap into SMO. Social Media was going on in Ireland for years. But it did not take place online but down in the pub. Instead of twitter we had pints of Guinness and for the non drinker a good glass of Irish tap water. We are no longer turning to the bar man for the recommendations now but to Google! So may advice to clients is take the conversions down the pub online! Thanks for the response!

Now I AM a fan! Love squinty eyed Clint, especially in For a few Dollars More.

Thanks! I've been following your tips and they've been very helpful in moving me up the Google Page Ranks for several cities I'm covering in relation to Real estate. I need to get more inbound links according to this. I'll start working on that now!

Jacob, do you have a post or list that goes into more Link Building detail? What about directory listings vs blog commenting on a popular blog with a link back, vs others, etc. It is such a time consuming deal and hard to decide the priority focus with Link Building. Thoughts?

I have not yet written a stand-alone post that goes into great detail about link-building practices (it will be coming), however SEOMoz has a 'Professionals Guide to Link Building' (http://www.seomoz.org/article/the-professionals…) that is excellent. And who better to trust than them!

As far as blog commenting versus directory listings; blog comments are easier IMO to get a lot of (and also allow you to interact with different bloggers – which may help you get a link later on), but in my experience directory listings tend to hold more weight (if it's a respectable directory)…

Link building definitely is time consuming and probably the hardest task facing an SEO, but at the same time it may be the most rewarding in the end.

Great tips. Especially love tip number four about providing valuable content. One I do my best to do as often as possible is to use my keywords in any additional content like video titles, images etc. that I include on a piece of content and add a title in any links I include.

Thanks Diane. Sounds like you're doing a pretty good job of trying to implement some SEO fundamentals the right way. Just stick at it, and I'm sure you see some results that will please you.
