Using canonical URL's to combat duplicate content issues.

Google, Yahoo, and MSN have just announced a new tag to combat duplicate content. They now support Canonical URL Links, which is a format that allows you to publicly specify your preferred version of a URL.

Canonical URL Links will help if your site has content that is:

  • Identical or vastly similar
  • Accessible through multiple URLs

This format provides you with more control over the URL returned in search results. It also helps to make sure that properties such as link popularity are consolidated to your preferred link.
